Toxin Name κ-theraphotoxin-Ec2a
Source Species Eucratoscelus  constrictus
Toxin Group Theraphotoxin
Description An insect-selective neurotoxin with an inhibitory cystine knot fold. This insecticidal neurotoxin potently blocks BKCa channels in cockroach dorsal unpaired median (DUM) neurons with an IC50 of 3.7 nM. This occurs in the absence of any shifts in the voltage dependence of activation. At higher concentrations (330 nM) it partially inhibits cockroach delayed-rectifier Kv currents, but lacks any actions on transient 'A-type' Kv, Nav or both HVA and M-LVA Cav channels in cockroach DUM neurons. Closely related to the insect-selective neurotoxin κ-TRTX-Ec2b and the non phyla-selective neurotoxin κ-TRTX-Ec2c from the same spider. No toxicity in mice after intracerebroventricular injection of up to 25 pmol/g (1.8 µg/20 g mouse).
