Toxin Name β-theraphotoxin-Gr1b
Source Species Grammostola  rosea (Chilean rose tarantula)
Toxin Group Theraphotoxin
Description Short-loop ICK 'tarantula' toxin. When injected intrathecally into young rats, β-TRTX-Gr1b showed analgesic effects in pain models such as the tail flick latency test, hot plate threshold test, von Frey threshold test, and formalin pain test. These effects were shown to be mediated by a non-opioid receptor related mechanism. The toxin does not show cross tolerance with morphine.

The molecular target of β-TRTX-Gr1b is unknown but its close homology (90% identity) with β-theraphotoxin-Gr1a and β-theraphotoxin-Tp2a suggests that the likely target is voltage-gated sodium channels; the toxin has been named accordingly.
